Anna Wintour Exits Vogue After 37 Years: Her Prada Legacy and Fashion Influence
Anna Wintour, born November 3, 1949, in London, has been a defining force in fashion for nearly four decades. As the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1987, she became one of the most influential figures in the industry. In June 2025, she announced she would step down from that role but remain as the magazine's global editorial director, with a new head of editorial content overseeing daily operations.
Early Life and Rise
Wintour left North London Collegiate School in 1966 and, four years later, began her career as a fashion assistant at Harper's & Queen. She then moved through a series of fashion editor roles at New York magazines before becoming editor of British Vogue in 1986 and editor of House & Garden in 1987, which she controversially relaunched in the U.S. as HG.
Transforming Vogue
In 1988, Wintour replaced Grace Mirabella as editor-in-chief of American Vogue, three years after Elle launched in the U.S. Under her leadership, Condé Nast launched spinoffs like Teen Vogue in 1993. She also elevated the Met Gala into a globally watched celebrity event, often co-chairing it since 1995. In 2013, she became artistic director at Condé Nast, and in 2020, global chief content officer.
The Devil Wears Prada Connection
Wintour's demanding persona, often accentuated by her signature sunglasses, inspired Lauren Weisberger's 2004 novel The Devil Wears Prada, later a hit film. She also appeared in documentaries such as The September Issue (2009) and The First Monday in May (2016), offering rare glimpses into her world.
Prada and Fashion Legacy
While Wintour's career is not defined by a single brand, her influence has been closely tied to luxury houses like Prada. The brand's intellectual elegance and boundary-pushing designs have frequently graced Vogue's pages under her watch, shaping how audiences perceive Italian luxury. As she transitions to a broader role, her impact on fashion media and brands like Prada remains profound.
