Chanel Classic Flap Prices Rise Across Europe and Asia: March 2022 Update

As of early March, Chanel enthusiasts in the United States and China can breathe a temporary sigh of relief—prices for the iconic Classic Flap remain unchanged in those markets. However, across Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, and Canada, select styles have seen notable price adjustments.

The increases, which took effect around March 3rd to 5th, affect a range of beloved models, including the Classic Mini, the Chanel 19, the Trendy CC, and—most significantly—the Classic Flap itself. In Europe, the price of a small Classic Flap rose by approximately €450 (6.2%), the medium by €450 (5.5%), the jumbo by €500 (5.6%), and the maxi by €550 (6.2%). Mini sizes also saw increases of about €200 (5.2–5.5%).

Chanel’s Global Pricing Strategy

Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion at Chanel, explained the brand’s long-standing price harmonization policy, introduced in 2015. The goal is to ensure that price differences across regions do not exceed 10%, ultimately offering customers the same price worldwide. “Our objective is to offer the same price everywhere to limit the parallel market,” Pavlovsky stated. “It’s an important signal to our customers, because it’s a way of engaging with them in an honest way.”

He emphasized that no customer should be penalized based on geography: “Nowadays, there is no reason to penalize a Chinese customer versus an American customer. It’s normal that they should pay the same price for the same product.”

Not About Competing with Hermès

Pavlovsky also addressed speculation that Chanel’s price hikes were aimed at positioning itself closer to Hermès and the Birkin bag. He dismissed this notion, saying, “Hermès bags are great, but I think our bags are very different. The construction of our bags is different, as are the materials. Even the way you wear them is different. So yes, we do compete with Hermès, but we are not in competition on a specific handbag.”

He added, “You can’t be the most luxurious, the most desirable brand and not have a price positioning that is high on the market today.”
