Chanel Fall 2022 Is An Ode To Tweed

With the closure of the Grand Palais for renovations until 2024, a new, temporary building has been erected to host some of the major events typically held in the Grand Palais. Called the Grand Palais Éphémère, the venue was designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. One of the most iconic events held in the Grand Palais is the Chanel Fashion Show, and this season, in true Chanel form, the Grand Palais Éphémère was completely transformed. Dressed head to toe in tweed, the show’s set was an immediate indicator to show-goers of what would soon walk down the runway. More tweed, and lots of it.

Chanel Bets Big on Tweed Bags and Ready to Wear for Fall 2022

Historically, Gabrielle Chanel first borrowed tweed from menswear in the mid-1920s afer a trip to Scotland. Inspired by the fabric and the ideal blank canvas it made, Gabrielle Chanel asked her artisans to create beautiful shades and hues inspired by the colors of Scotland’s Highlands countryside. From there, tweed not only became an eternal House code for Chanel, but it was revloutionized in a sense. It became urban thanks to the Chanel suit, no longer reserved for outdoor activities. For Fall 2022 Virginie Viard revisits this archival element, which remains central to the brand, dedicating the entire collection to tweed.

A bold tribute to tweed and its origins, models waltzed down the runway in varrying shapes and shades of the textured fabric. Of course, there was also plenty of knitwear, as is to be expected from a F/W collection, but overwhelmingly, the looks remained an ode to tweed. As for the bags, many of them paired back to the RTW itself, crafted from the same fabric or featuring details from the RTW pieces. While tweed was overwhelmingly present, of course there were leather silhouettes too. Patent returns this season, with one of the most interesting black patent bags being a vintage-esque backpack, worn by a model over a pink coat. The rounded Boy Bag that was shown for cruise appeared again this season, alongside many, many Classic Flaps. View bags from the runway below.
