Hermès High Jewelry Illuminates New York: Inside the Les Jeux de l'Ombre Presentation

On a crisp November evening in New York City, Hermès transformed The Shed at Hudson Yards into a stage for its latest high jewelry collection, Les Jeux de l'Ombre. The private showing, held on Thursday, November 3rd, marked the New York debut of the collection, which first captivated audiences during Paris Haute Couture Week. Designed by Pierre Hardy, creative director of Hermès jewelry, the collection explores the interplay of light and shadow, much like the chiaroscuro technique in painting.

The venue, The Shed, provided a modern backdrop that echoed the collection's theme. Guests were greeted by staff who checked them in via iPads and handed out seating cards. The lobby buzzed with excitement as Hermès aficionados, press, and celebrities like Dorothy Wang and Ezra J. William mingled over champagne, wine, and a specialty Hermès cocktail.

Inside the theater, the space was divided into two sections, side A and side B, with a central stage draped in sheer curtains. As the lights dimmed, a hush fell over the audience. The performance, featuring a special piece by Lina Lapelytė, began with a whisper and swelled into a full-bodied song and dance. Singers, dressed in black and wearing pieces from the collection, moved between the curtains, casting shadows and silhouettes that mirrored the collection's inspiration.

After the ten-minute performance, the curtains lifted to reveal 53 exquisite pieces by Hardy. The collection is a study in contrast: pink diamonds set against black diamonds, white diamonds juxtaposed with blue sapphires. The most intricate piece, Couleurs du Jour, is a necklace inspired by the stained-glass windows of Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. It features rough diamonds, crystals, spessartites, aquamarines, tsavorites, and mother-of-pearl marquetry, and includes an invisible mechanism that allows it to open and close, and even be worn back to front.
