Inside the Hermès New York Sample Sale: What to Expect, What to Buy, and Insider Tips
The anticipation was palpable as I dashed to the train, my mind racing with possibilities. It was the first day of the Hermès sample sale in New York, and I had a mission: to secure treasures for myself and fellow enthusiasts who had entrusted me with their wish lists. The journey from the suburbs to Penn Station was a blur, but the excitement only grew as I approached the venue at 317 West 33rd Street.

Upon arrival, I spotted a queue of fashion-forward individuals braving the brisk wind, their eyes fixed on the door. A stern doorman distributed masks and checked QR codes, reminding us that entry was strictly by appointment. After a brief wait, I was ushered inside, where a coat check and a staircase led to the sale floor on the second level.
The layout was meticulously organized. To the left, a vast array of women's shoes, starting at size 34, beckoned. The center showcased silk scarves and ties, while behind them, racks of ready-to-wear for both men and women stood neatly arranged. The back wall featured men's shoes up to size 46, and the right side was dedicated to costume jewelry. A sales associate confirmed that the most popular shoe sizes were 38 and 39, and items were constantly being restocked.

Shoppers hoping to snag a Birkin or Kelly would be disappointed—the only bag available was a rustic canvas tote, clearly a veteran of many sales. However, the jewelry section offered a tempting selection of leather bracelets, enamel bangles, and scarf rings, though Clic-H bracelets were absent this time. A strict 10-minute browsing limit was enforced, and the countdown began all too soon.
With time running out, I grabbed a cashmere scarf, a silk twilly, and a few other finds, then headed to the checkout. The line snaked through stanchions, but five registers kept things moving efficiently. My purchases were placed in a plain white bag, with the item count marked in marker, and the receipt stapled to the outside.
What to Wear and What to Buy
Comfort is key. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather, as there's a brief outdoor wait. Avoid wearing any Hermès items to prevent confusion with sale merchandise. The discounts are substantial: ready-to-wear is 50-70% off, shoes and silks are 50% off, and blankets, towels, baby items, and costume jewelry are all 50% off.
The Rules of the Sale
There are limits to ensure fairness: six pairs of shoes per person, with only one pair of Oran, Oasis, or Izmir styles. Equestrian ready-to-wear is limited to one item, and while there's no limit on other RTW, you can't buy more than three of the same item. Silk scarves are capped at six, including just one cashmere. Jewelry is restricted to one enamel or one hinged bracelet per person.
Getting There
The sale takes place at Soiffer Haskin, 317 West 33rd Street, New York, NY 10001, conveniently located near the 34 Street Penn Station subway stop.
Insider Tips
Bring a friend to hold your place in line and keep you grounded. Any appointment time works—items are replenished continuously, so don't fret if your slot is later. Most importantly, buy only what you love to avoid buyer's remorse. And remember, this sale is not about flipping items for profit; the resale market is already saturated, and these pieces are not the highly coveted Birkin or Kelly.
My haul included crystal Orans, Auteuil sandals, a 140cm cashmere scarf, a 90cm silk scarf, a Charniere enamel bracelet, a jockey vest, a Twillaine coat, and an embroidered pocket tee—all at impressive discounts. The experience was exhilarating, and I left with a sense of triumph.
For those lucky enough to receive an invitation, this sale is a unique opportunity to own Hermès pieces at accessible prices. Have you attended the Hermès NYC sale? Share your finds and tag us on Instagram @ @boptalk.
