Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama have joined forces once again, nearly a decade after their first groundbreaking collaboration. The new collection, set to launch in January 2023, infuses the French house’s most iconic silhouettes with Kusama’s signature polka dots, pumpkins, and reflective spheres. The partnership was previewed on the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2023 runway at the Salk Institute in San Diego last May, and the fashion world has been buzzing ever since.

At 93, Kusama is one of the most influential living female artists. Her whimsical dotted works and infinity mirror rooms have earned her a place in art history. She holds the record for the most expensive painting by a living female artist sold at auction—.1 million in 2014 for White No. 28—and is the highest-grossing female artist at auction, with total sales of 9 million. A childhood hallucination led Kusama to see the world through a kaleidoscope of dots, which she interprets as celestial symbols representing Earth among the stars.

The full collection spans leather goods, shoes, ready-to-wear, and, of course, handbags. Kusama’s reflective silver balls, reminiscent of her immersive mirror installations, appear alongside her beloved yellow pumpkins. To celebrate the launch, Louis Vuitton is hosting special installations across Tokyo. Key locations include Tokyo Tower, Zojoji Temple, and Tokyo Station. An animated billboard in Shinjuku will take viewers inside a Louis Vuitton trunk adorned with Kusama’s dots, while another installation features chrome sphere sculptures and a pumpkin-shaped hot air balloon.

During Art Basel in Miami, the maison will also present a dedicated booth from Thursday to Saturday, highlighting its artistic collaborations—similar to its presentation at Paris+ by Art Basel in October. Michael Burke, chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, told Women’s Wear Daily that the brand is excited to engage with the art world’s “giddy” discourse, especially after the global pandemic.
