In late 2024, a surprising item caused a stir in the fashion world: an handbag sold by Walmart that bore a striking resemblance to the iconic Hermès Birkin. Dubbed the "Wirkin" or "Wermes," this faux-leather tote, listed as the "Platinium Lychee Tote" by brand BESTSPR, quickly sold out and ignited a fierce debate among handbag enthusiasts.

The Wirkin mimicked several signature Birkin design elements: dual handles, a flap closure with a turnlock, sangles, pontet, and straps. It even claimed to be a 30cm size, with measurements close to the real thing (11.81"L x 9.45"H x 5.91"W versus the Birkin's 11.5" W x 9" H x 6" D). However, it lacked notable features such as the clou (feet), the hallmark lock and clochette, and it added a shoulder strap—a departure from the original design.

Most importantly, the Wirkin lacked Hermès' name, date stamping, and any authentic markings. It was never intended to be passed off as a real Birkin, yet its similarity raised questions about why Hermès hasn't taken legal action. Adding to the intrigue, Walmart also sells pre-owned authentic Hermès bags through Japanese reseller eLady Limited, often at prices above retail.

The Dupe Culture Divide

The Wirkin polarized the fashion community. Supporters of dupes argued that luxury should be accessible and that the Birkin's exclusivity—where even wealthy customers struggle to purchase one—justifies alternatives. Detractors condemned dupe culture as undermining the craftsmanship and heritage of true luxury. The debate became heated, dividing handbag lovers worldwide.

Some pointed out that Jane Birkin herself wanted a practical, everyday bag, not a status symbol. For those who cannot afford a five-figure handbag, the Wirkin offers a similar aesthetic without the financial burden. Others emphasized that nothing can replicate the craftsmanship of a genuine Birkin, and that the value of luxury lies in the buyer's perception.

The controversy also highlighted Hermès' restrictive sales practices. In a CBS interview, artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas acknowledged that buying a Birkin requires time and patience. Three California residents even sued Hermès, alleging antitrust violations for being unable to purchase the bags. This exclusivity fuels the demand for dupes like the Wirkin.

Walmart's Shift: From Wirkin to Authentic Luxury

By January 2025, the Wirkin had disappeared from Walmart's website. In a surprising turn, Walmart announced a collaboration with U.S. reseller Rebag to offer authentic pre-owned luxury handbags, including five- and six-figure pieces. This move seemed to distance Walmart from the dupe controversy while embracing the luxury market.

Whether this signals a newfound respect for Hermès or simply a strategic pivot remains unclear. What is clear is that the Wirkin sparked a conversation about authenticity, accessibility, and the meaning of luxury in modern fashion.
